Thistledown usually exhibits at two shows a year - the VA Classic and MaPaca - with no more than 5 alpacas. At MaPaca 2006, our grey male won Reserve Champion fleece. At the 2005 VA Classic, our alpacas won two Championships - grey male and brown female, and at MaPaca 2005, the largest show in the nation, our 5 alpacas won a first, two seconds, a third and a fourth. At MaPaca 2004 we won 13 ribbons out of 10 halter/fleece entries, including Champion and Reserve Champion fleece, Best Prepared Fleece in Show, and 4 blue ribbons. At the 2004 Virginia Classic, one of the two alpacas we showed was judged best grey female in show (Reserve Champion in the grey/multi class).

Thistledown Alpacas was named to reflect our Celtic heritage and the quality of fiber in our herd. The thistle is symbolic of Scotland, and one of the symbols for Wales is three feathers in a crown. The combination of the thistle and the feather represents our intention to breed alpacas with fiber as soft as thistledown! We are not in the quantity business - our objective is to stay small, with no more than 30 of the best quality breeding stock we can produce.
Spending time with our animals, knowing each of them by name and learning about their individual personalities is the hallmark of a small farm. When you buy alpacas from a small breeder you get excellent value for money, unbeatable customer service and animals with unique and trusting personalities that are a joy to be around.
